Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin (RUS), 2003 World Junior Champions
Domnina: I preferred the audience at Europeans in Malmoe, they were clapping more and louder. We don’t yet have any plans for the new season, there was just no time to think of that.

Shabalin: This was our first season together and for both of us the most successful so far. We are very pleased with it. We had a little mistake on the spin, we rushed into it. We got some deductions for that. (On switching between junior and senior events) It was a bit difficult because of the different Compulsory Dances. We had to prepare different ones for each competition. And it was also a bit hard psychologically.

Shabalin: We are very pleased with the performance, and so are our coaches. I would say that it was the best of the whole season. We were a bit nervous today, but you need to be nervous to concentrate.

Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin (RUS), 2003 World Junior Champions
Domnina: It was not bad. It has been a junior dance before, but I don’t remember doing it. We only worked on it one month only.
Shabalin: In practice, this dance came easy to us. In competition, it’s harder, of course, because you’re nervous. But we want it to look easy and effortless. We are nervous, but we shouldn’t let if affect our performance. These are our first (senior) World Championships, but so far we feel relaxed. I was more nervous a Junior Worlds, because we were competing for the first place there.

Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin (RUS), 2003 Junior GP Final Champions
Domnina: When went out, I saw the full arena, the cameras, and it was a shock! But of course, the audience was great, they supported us so much during the performance.
Shabalin: We learned at our first Europeans that we have to stay calmer. We weren’t used to the hype during the warm up, the shouting, the noise. That’s the biggest difference to junior competitions. We didn’t pay too much attention to the other couples in practice, we focused on ourselves. It doesn’t matter to us that the World Champions were there. If you only watch the others, you don’t have time to practice yourself!

Domnina: I missed the twizzle in the side by side footwork. I tried my best to get back into it as quickly as possible. This never had happened to me before this season. We’re competing in our first Europeans. It’s very prestigious to be here. It’s at another level than the junior competitions, and it means more responsibility for us. It’s also more pressure. It’s our first senior international competition, and therefore a bit hard for us.
