Comments on Free Dance 2004 Europeans

Oksana Domnina/Maxim Shabalin (RUS) 2003 World Junior Champions
Domnina: We’re competing in our second Europeans, but we’re still nervous, of course. You always are, no matter if it is your first, second or tenth championship. Our twizzles were a bit messy today.

Shabalin: We are glad that it’s over now. We felt nervous today, after all it’s Europeans. Yesterday we skated really well, but today we’d say it was mediocre for us. I think we put out the emotion and were able to deliver it, but there are still many things to work on and to improve for the World Championships.

Domnina: We and our coaches are happy with this performance. I think it was the best one this season that we did in competition, not counting practices. We have new costumes, and I’m in trousers for the first time, usually I wear skirts. That was a bit unusual.

Shabalin: It’s always a bit different when you wear a new costume. We wore this one for the third time only – the first time was in practice at home in Odintsovo and the second time this morning in practice.

Domnina: A similar thing happened to us last year at the Junior Grand Prix Final, when a flower piece fell off my hair. So hopefully something like this won’t happen ever again.

Shabalin: (On his bootstrap coming lose) At is difficult to refocus after an incident like this. There is a lot of stress anyway when you go out to compete, and when you have to start over, it’s double the stress. It’s a situation you haven’t encountered. I think we still skated the Waltz well for ourselves, but when we started the first time, we had more power. The second time, I wouldn’t say we were careful, but we held back a little and didn’t want to make any mistake.
